Born from a need for texture, tone and tactility.
In a market often divided between visual appeal and performance, George Fethers saw an opportunity to create something that offered both. Modäl is the result: a textile-inspired laminate designed to bring softness, texture and material depth into commercial and residential interiors.
The idea took shape in a hotel room. While travelling frequently for work, the team noticed a recurring theme: wallpaper created atmosphere but lacked durability. That observation became the spark for something new. A high-pressure laminate with the warmth and layered aesthetic of fabric, but with commercial-grade performance.
“There was a clear gap in the market for something that looked refined but could actually perform in real-world settings,” says Will James, General Manager at George Fethers. “We wanted to capture the atmosphere of wallpaper, but make it robust enough for aged care, hospitality and healthcare.”
Many surfaces either looked good or performed well, rarely both. Modäl was developed to bridge that divide, delivering refined tactility and durability in one cohesive product. With a Group 1 fire rating (when pressed on FRMDF) and a robust surface finish, it meets the strict demands of commercial spaces, without compromising the look and feel.
Though originally developed for commercial use, Modäl’s potential quickly expanded. During the 18-month development process, including close collaboration with a Japanese supplier, it became clear that the range could move seamlessly into residential applications. The curated palette, informed by trend forecasting and timeless design principles, now lends itself to everything from joinery and headboards to cabinetry and shelving.
Even the name carries meaning. Modäl references modal fabric a material made from wood pulp, known for its softness and strength. It’s a subtle nod to the tactile essence of the product, as well as George Fethers’ long-standing connection to timber surfaces.
“Modäl brings a new layer to our offering,” says Britanni Clarke, Product Development Lead. “It supports the growing demand for mixed materiality, where surfaces are not only durable, but also tactile and beautifully resolved.”
Modäl also represents a new layer in the George Fethers portfolio, supporting the shift toward material-driven interiors that are both expressive and enduring.
Whats next? The team sees plenty of opportunity ahead but remains committed to a timeless, considered approach. Expansion will come naturally if and when the product calls for it.
Modäl is now available, a new choice for designers seeking surfaces that deliver more: more texture, more warmth, more longevity.
